The National Day of Prayer Chairman Greg Laurie Faces Oppositions from LGBT Communities

While the National Day of Prayer fast approaches, gay activists are pressuring government officials to rescind Greg Laurie's invitation to lead the D.C.-based events.

The evangelical pastor takes a stance against LGBT communities, says The Human Rights Campaign, the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization in the U.S.

Laurie should not be welcome on Capitol Hill for the upcoming 62nd annual event taking place on May 2, the group's religion and faith program director Sharon Groves insisted.

Furthermore, OutServe-SLDN, an association of actively serving LGBT military personnel, is requesting the Pentagon to remove Laurie from the leading position, because of his anti-gay message.

"Pastor Laurie's message is out of step with what the majority of people of faith across this country believe," Dr. Sharon Groves, director of HRC's Religion & Faith Program, said, according to The Christian Post.

"In greater numbers than ever before, people of faith are feeling compelled to speak up and organize for equality – because of their faith."

Due to similar complaints earlier this year, Pastor Lourie Giglio was withdrawn from delivering President Obama's inaugural prayer in January.

Greg Laurie, who is the honorary chairman of 2013 National Day of Prayer, is aware of the controversy and still plans to attend the events, a spokeswoman for the pastor said, The Associated Press reports.

After a prayer breakfast at the Pentagon, Laurie is scheduled to join the Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill along with Dr. James and Shirley Dobson, Congressman Robert Aderholt, Vonette Bright, Pat Boone, Congressman Frank Wolf among others, says CP.

The National Day of Prayer Task Force anticipates the event to hold profound significance for the U.S.

"We have an unprecedented opportunity to see the Lord's healing and renewing power made manifest as we call on citizens to humbly come before His throne," states the Task Force.

"To echo the words of Mary Washington, mother of our nation's first president, we believe it is time to 'Remember that God is our only sure trust.'"
