Today I was looking at pictures of children in international adoptions and then I realized that almost every child was a girl. I knew that a large number of girls are aborted in China due to the one child per family policy but didn't realize that it also influenced adoption too.

In 2006 the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) reported that 91% of children adopted from China are girls. 44% of the children were under 1 year of age when adopted. 52% were between the ages of 1 and 4 years old. An additional 4% of the adopted children were older than 4 years of age.

Abortion Statistics

According to All Girls Allowed, "Chinese data show that 13 million abortions are performed each year, for an average rate of 35,000 abortions per day. One field researcher has concluded that he is fairly certain that most of the 13 million annual abortions are forced."

FrontPage Magazine reports, "400 million - That's the number of additional people that China says would be around today if not for the one-child-per-couple rule that took effect 40 years ago. The country says 336 million abortions and 196 million sterilizations have occurred since then."
